Barbara Averille (Trainer) Henry

Barbara Averille Trainer Henry age 92 of Granger, Indiana; passed away peacefully on WednesdaY, May 1, 2024 with her family by her side.

She was born on February 8, 1932 in Indiana, Pennsylvania, to the late Maurice W. Trainer and S. Aletta Schreiner Trainer.

Barb, as she was best known, was a graduate of Indiana High School, Indiana, Pa.; and she also graduated from Slippery Rock University, Slippery Rock, Pa with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education and a Minor in English. Barb worked as a Phys Ed. and English teacher for 9 years. She married Larry Fred Henry of Duquesne, Pa., on August 6, 1952. She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in South Bend, where she sang tenor in the church choir.

Barb was a racquetball instructor, and a AA women’s league tennis player at South Bend Racquet Club, for many years. She is well known in the golfing community; placing second 3 times in the South Bend Women’s Golf Championship Flight, as well as placing first in the Erskin Women’s Club Championship once. And in 2020 Barb also placed first in the Women’s Flight Championship at Four Lakes, in Edwardsburg, MI. Barb was an avid Bridge player, playing in many Bridge leagues. She also played in the Elks women’s bowling league for several years. Barb enjoyed passing time putting together puzzles and reading novels.

Barbara is survived by three children: Eric (Loretta) Henry, of Granger, Indiana; Leslie (Rob) Hodges, of Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia and Lisa (Jere) Hawn, of Fort Greeley, Alaska. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Letitia (Michael) Goodroad, of Terre Haute, Indiana, Aaron (Jordan) Marek, of Indiana, Trever Hodges, of Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia and Nicole ‘Nikki’ (Trent) Currie, of Chickamauga, Georgia. Barb has five great-grandchildren: Camryn Cheyanne, Rylan, Wyatt, and Maddlin.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Betty T. McGregor; her brother, W.S. “Bud” Trainer; and her former husband, Larry Fred Henry.

A celebration of life will be held at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 225 Haney Ave., South Bend, IN 46613, on July 20, 2024 at 11:00 a.m.
