Dr. Becky Ann Szabo, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by loved ones at 6:25 a.m. on February 12, 2018, after a courageous four year battle with malignant melanoma.
Becky was born Becky Ann Schwindaman on May 23, 1961 in Streeter, Illinois to Robert Raymond and Shirley Mae (Gregorich) Schwindaman. She graduated from Elkhart Central High School in 1979, then went to Indiana University Bloomington, graduating with a BA in Biology in 1983. She then received a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1987 from the Indiana University School of Dentistry in Indianapolis. Becky practiced Dentistry in the Michiana area until she retired in 2016.
She married Robert John Szabo on September 22, 1990. Becky and her husband Bob, also a Dentist, practiced together until her retirement.
Becky is survived by her husband, Bob; daughter, Mary (Justin) McKinney of South Bend; son, John Szabo of Granger; and granddaughter, Ryleigh Ann McKinney of South Bend.
She is also survived by her mother, Shirley Schwindaman of Elkhart; five brothers and sisters: Lynn Schultz of Stafford, VA, Robert (Marisa) Schwindaman of Granger, Michael (Michelle) Schwindaman of Cassopolis, MI, Mary (Sergio) Salazar of Kingwood, TX, and Steven (Sarah) Schwindaman of Elkhart; and many nieces and nephews.
Becky was preceded in death by her father, Robert; sister, Julie Leonhard of Indianapolis; and infant sister, Ann Schwindaman.
Becky was a cheerful and energetic person who loved her family, friends and patients. She was a devout Catholic and Eucharistic Minister at St. Pius X Catholic Church. She loved cooking, traveling and time with her friends and family. Despite her life-long health problems, she lived a happy and faith filled life; and she will continue to be an inspiration to those who knew her.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4-8 p.m., with a vigil service taking place at 4:30 p.m., at the McGann Hay, Granger Chapel, 13260 SR 23, enter off Cherry Rd. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 11:00 a.m., with visitation one hour prior, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, with Msgr. William Schooler officiating.
