SOUTH BEND – Mrs. Carol K. (Sobieralski) Gleckler, 73, passed away following a brief illness at Memorial Hospital at 12:05pm on Tuesday, January 5, 2021.
Carol was born to her late parents Kathleen (Podell) and Leo Sobieralski on April 17, 1947 in South Bend and was a lifelong resident. On June 18, 1968, Carol married the late Terry Brennan and they would eventually have three children. On September 28, 1996 in South Bend, in a ceremony officiated by the late Indiana Governor Joe Kernan, she married the longtime love of her life Edward L. Gleckler.
Carol had a vivacious and fun-loving spirit, and always enjoyed welcoming friends and family into her home throughout her life. She worked for many years at Dodge Manufacturing and The Whistle Stop. In 1988, Carol and Ed took over the ownership of the landmark Joe’s Tavern in South Bend. As a small business owner, she poured her heart and soul into the tavern and its catering operations and took great pride in serving her many loyal customers. Under Carol’s guidance, Joe’s became THE place to be on Notre Dame football weekends. The food was legendary, and the atmosphere was lively and authentic, all thanks to Carol’s vision and hard work. On her rare days off, Carol enjoyed spending time with her family, her grandchildren and her ever-expanding network of friends. She also made it a priority throughout her life to donate to a number of local charities including St. Margaret’s House.
In addition to her husband Ed, those left to cherish her memory are her children: Brian Brennan, Robert Brennan and Karagh Brennan; her sister Sandy Andert of South Bend; two brothers: David (Kathy) Sobieralski of South Bend and Johnny (Ross Mangun) Sobieralski of Indianapolis. She was also blessed with three grandchildren who will miss her greatly: Brooklyn and Samuel Brennan and Sophie Sweeney; and numerous nieces and nephews. A sister Kathleen Martin also predeceased her along with her parents.
Because of Covid-19 restrictions, she would want everyone to remain safe and healthy therefore, a Life Celebration will be held later this year. Cremation is being handled by McGann Hay University Chapel and the American Cremation Society. The family suggests to those wishing to remember Carol by making a memorial donation to consider the Fair Haven Foundation – PO Box 441683, Indianapolis, IN 46244 (https://fairhavenfoundation.org/).
