David James Heck

June 26, 1965 — January 31, 2025

South Bend

David James Heck, 59, peacefully passed away on Friday, January 31, at Raclin House, Center for Hospice Care, in Mishawaka, after a year-long battle with cancer.

Dave was born in South Bend on June 26, 1965 to the late James Donald Heck and Darlene (Schoen) Heck, who survives in Granger. Surviving siblings are Pamela (Chip) Newman of Mishawaka, Bonnie Hay of Granger, Lynette Fineran of South Bend, Mary (Kerry) Collins of Deer Park, IL, Michael (BethAnn) Heck of Mishawaka, and many nieces and nephews.

Given his love for the outdoors, Dave launched an early career in golf course maintenance, then worked many years as a irrigation technician. His clients were like family, as they followed him around their yards, engaging in friendly, and often meaningful conversation. Dave couldn't drive through a neighborhood without recalling the owners of various houses, and a little story about each one.

A graduate of Adams High School, Dave played football and golf. His love for golf continued throughout his life, with standing games taking place every weekend that the weather allowed. Many of his golf buddies were childhood friends, and were at his side in his last days. Their stories were hilarious and heartwarming, recalling Dave as both good and kind.

A Celebration of Life was held at McGann Hay, Granger Chapel on Tuesday. Rev. Ani Ikene officiated, and cremation followed.

The family wishes to thank the care givers at Raclin House, for the overall loving and dignified care that was provided. Memorial donations in his memory may be made to The Center for Hospice Care or 1st Tee Golf Program for kids at Studebaker Golf Course.
