Dr. Thomas J. Mango, II, MD, 52, died peacefully and unexpectedly in his Granger home on October 3, 2017, of natural causes.
He was born August 30, 1965 to Thomas and Anna (Lashuk) Mango. His father preceded him in death.
Tom is survived by his wife, Kim Mango (Sanders), and their two children, Thomas James III, "TJ" (age 9) and Michael Joseph Mango (age 7), his mother, Anna Mango of Elizabeth, NJ, and his uncle, Walter (Karen) Lashuk of Springfield, NJ as well as several cousins.
Tom was a 1983 valedictorian graduate of Elizabeth High School, in Elizabeth NJ, as well as the captain of his high school debate team. He was then accepted directly into a six year accelerated medical school honors program at Northwestern University, Evanston, Il. and graduated in 1989. Tom completed his residency at University Hospital, Newark, NJ, and then proceeded to complete his fellowship in Orthopedic Spine at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke's, in Chicago.
Tom was a very talented and highly respected spine surgeon who was adored by many of his patients. He was wonderfully caring and had a very gentle bedside manner. He was the current owner of The Center for Minimally Invasive Spine Care, in Mishawaka, Indiana and was formerly employed by Allied Bone and Joint as well as a former partner of South Bend Orthopedics. He was also a member of the North American Spine Society (NASS) and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS).
For anyone who knew Tom knew he was a very quick-witted individual with a wry sense of humor. He enjoyed everything Northwestern, especially the Northwestern Wildcats. He also had a passion for sailing, enjoyed politics, but most of all he absolutely cherished his children. TJ and Michael were the loves of his life and his accomplishment of which he is most proud. His boys had the ability to make him smile and laugh the way nobody else could. They will miss him immensely.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St Pius X Parish, where he was a member, on Monday at 10:00am, Fir Rd at SR 23 in Granger, Msgr William Schooler, Pastor officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior, from 9-10, in the Parish Center at the church. Cremation will follow, then he will be buried with his father at Fairview Cemetery, Westfield, NJ.
