SOUTH BEND-Eileen Yvonne Slein, 87, passed away on October 28, 2017. Her Life ended in the same manner in which she lived, with quiet dignity, grace and few complaints. Eileen was her families’ North Star providing an ultimate source of guidance and advice.
She was born April 20, 1930 in Pittsburgh, PA to the late Robert and Mildred (Rosenberg) Gross. Her brother, Dr. Richard Gross; and great grandchildren, Sarah Beth Korensky and Alexia Buti, also preceded her in death.
Eileen leaves behind her loving husband of 69 years, Albert; her beloved children, Marilyn (Tom) Swartz of South Bend, Bobbie Axelberg of Granger, Karen (Patrick) Powers of Granger, and Jerry (Dawn) Slein of Plymouth. She is also survived by her brother, Michael (Pat) Gross of CA; sisters-in-law, Thelma Goldberg of FL, Darlene Gross of PA; 9 grandchildren, Mark (Liz) Swartz, Lisa Heilman, Joe (Sarah) Heilman, Melanie Edmondson (Jeff), Benjamin Slein, Jonathan Slein, Steven Slein, Rachael Powers (Fawzi), and Daniel Powers; 4 great-grandchildren, Andrea Korensky, Jessica Korensky, Ezra Swartz, and Isaac Swartz; and 1 great-great-grandchild, Aliyah Buti.
Eileen served as a teachers’ aide and then teacher in the early years of Head Start. Her life’s work was at United Health Services for 25 years. She was the resource and referral coordinator. She provided services to countless clients whose needs ranged from wheelchairs, dental services to hospice services.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, October 30, at Temple Beth-El. Burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery.
