Eleanor Porte, 102, formerly of South Bend, passed away peacefully August 5, 2018 in Greenfield, WI, after a brief illness.
Born January 8, 1916 in South Bend, IN, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Florence (Ulbright) Sholly.
On January 8, 1938, Eleanor married John W. Porte, Sr. He preceded her in death in 1998. To their union, they were blessed with four children: Carol Lynn (Louis) Groner of Sherman, TX, John William (Geanie) Porte, Jr. of Platte City, MO, Janet Marie Porte of Franklin, WI, and Phillip Allen (Lorraine) Porte of Chesterfield, MI. Also left to cherish her memory are: 6 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Duane Sholly; cousins; nieces; nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Helen (John) Laughlin and Jane (William) Slater; sister-in-law, Nancy Sholly; and brother-in-law, John Laughlin.
Eleanor was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. The expression “age is just a number” was certainly true in her life. She was active until about 4 months ago when she became ill. She had a compassionate heart and faith in Jesus Christ. She was a longtime member of First Brethren Church of South Bend, before moving to Clement Manor in Wisconsin, to be near her daughter. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Clement Manor Nursing Home in Greenfield, WI for the compassionate care they showed Eleanor to the very end.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 11th, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation one hour prior, at First Brethren Church, South Bend. Burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The First Brethren Church of South Bend.
