Gertrude "Gert" Zavatsky 92, passed away peacefully Sunday evening at Eastlake Nursing Home, Elkhart.
Gert was born March 29, 1925 in South Bend to the late Ben and Anna (Hoffman) Kornfeld. On January 17, 1943 she married the love of her life, Harry Zavatsky, who passed away on January 6, 2016. Gert graduated from South Bend Central High School. She was a retired lecturer for Weight Watchers in Elkhart/St. Joe counties for 35 years.
She was a member of the former Temple Israel – Elkhart and was a lifelong member of Sinai Synagogue, South Bend, where she taught Sunday School for many years and she was a member of the Sinai Sisterhood.
Gert enjoyed life to the fullest! Not only was she a great speaker, but Gert was also a great cook! With her strong Jewish background, Gert kept Kosher and made ALL the best traditional foods. Everyone loved Gert's cooking. She was a caring person, and the 1000's of people Gert lectured to all cherished her.
Left to cherish her memory are: her loving son, Allen (Donna) Zavatsky; daughter-in-law, Heidi (the late Larry) Zavatsky; and three wonderful grandchildren, Jennifer of Portland, OR, Rob (Susanne) of Cashiers, NC, and Jeff of Middlebury, IN; and one sister, Mitzi Monovitz of Omaha, NE. Gert was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Zavatsky; son, Larry Zavatsky; a sister, Frances Schneider; and two brothers, Meyer Kornfeld and Edward Kornfeld.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 2 at 11 a.m. at the Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery Chapel (Calhoun St., south of W. Jefferson Blvd.), Mishawaka with Rabbi Michael Friedland officiating. Burial will follow.
