Glenn Terry

Glenn Louis Terry, was born in Chicago, Illinois July 22, 1928, the fourth of eight children, born to Donald Alexander Terry and Marion Ursula (Naylor) Terry. The family moved to South Bend, Indiana in early 1935 and Glenn graduated in 1947 from Woodrow Wilson High School. He worked primarily as a farm hand for A. J. Matthys. After graduation he got a position with the University of Notre Dame in LOBUND Institute. While working for LOBUND (Laboratories of Bacteriology - University of Notre Dame) he was also assistant distribution manager for the South Bend Journal. Glenn then returned to the same farm and stayed till the fall of 1950 when he quit and returned to LOBUND. While there he met and dated Elizabeth (Betty) Anna Eilerman before being drafted into the U.S. Army Jan. 22, 1951. After basic training Glenn was assigned to Camp Detrick, Frederick, Maryland and corresponded with Elizabeth frequently. After the tour of two years and one day he was discharged on January 22, 1953. He took a part time job with Indiana Cab Company as a taxi driver. On April 6, 1953 the appointment came through for the South Bend Police Department and he stayed in various capacities for 26 ½ years leaving in 1979 with the rank of Services Division Chief. He was then employed at the University of Notre Dame as Security Director and stayed there for six years leaving in the fall of 1985. Immediately upon leaving he started Terry Investigations, INC., for eleven years. He served as a bailiff in Juvenile Court for a short time before retiring.Glenn was very active with the Cursillo Movement for 25 years and was the Regional Cursillo Treasurer for four years. He was a member of the Barth-Hamilton Memorial Retreat Group going to St. Meinrad on retreat each year in Advent for many years. He is a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #553, board of directors of St. Joseph County Right to Life, FBI National Academy and Associates of Indiana and Fraternal Order of Police, South Bend Lodge #36. He was active locally with East Side Little League, St. Vincent De-Paul Society, Little Flower Church, charter member of F.I.R.E., INC. (Families Involved in Rehabilitative Environments), a founding member of the South Bend Policemen's Federal Credit Union, a member of the Urban League Board of Directors, the first Prison Work Release System in St. Joseph County, member of CAMPS (Cooperative Area Manpower Planning System), and served on the Charitable Solicitations Commission of St. Joseph County.Glenn married Betty June 27, 1953, and they had three children, Michael (Janet) Terry, Patricia (Michael) Douglas and Amy (Eugene) Dylewski II, they survive. Also surviving is a brother-in law, Edward Eilerman; twelve grandchildren: Shawn (Christina) Terry, Lucas Terry, Stephen (Swati) Douglas, Michael Douglas JR, Bradley (Chelsea) Douglas, Eugene (Molly) Dylewski III, Amanda (Caleb) Mast, Joshua Dylewski, Zachary (Elleigh) Dylewski, Jacob Dylewski, and Emmy (Adam) Diltz; and fourteen great grandchildren: Levi and Tanner Terry, Shyla and Kethan Douglas, Genesis, Eugene IV, James, Andreanna, Reagan and Theodore Dylewski, Morgen, Cameron, Olivia and Abigail Mast.Preceded in death: His Wife, Betty; 5 brothers and 2 sister; and his Grandson, Jason Douglas.A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 at St. Therese Little Flower Catholic Church, 54191 N. Ironwood Rd., at 12 pm., and visitation one hour prior.
