SOUTH BEND-Hugh L. Metzger, 92, passed away August 10, 2022. Born October 26, 1929 in Rochester, NY, he was the son of the late Leon H. and Beatrice I. Metzger. He was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Berg and daughters-in-law, Yvette Hart-Metzger and Peggy Metzger, as well as his beloved wife Birgit B. Metzger, whom he met at Sinai Synagogue. They married on September 26, 1981. Left to cherish his memory is his loving and devoted brother, Robert Metzger (Marsha), and Hugh's three children: Jeffrey Metzger (Annette) of East Hampton, NY, Gary Metzger of Del Ray Beach, FL, and Karen Metzger Leuther (Michael) of Fishers, IN; his six grandchildren: Brittany Metzger Nierste (Vincent), Joel Metzger, Stephen Kabaker, Jessica Leuther, Sarah Leuther and David Leuther, his two great-grandchildren: Amelia and Augustus Nierste; his three step-children: Karen Zubkoff Perna of Chandler, AZ; Ian Zubkoff (Oh) of Scottsdale, AZ, Brian Zubkoff of South Bend; his four step-grandchildren: Julie Perna Beauregard (Michael), Aaron Perna, Kelsey Zubkoff, and Adam Zubkoff, and his two step-great grandchildren: Cooper and Brooklyn Beauregard; and his former wife and mother of his children, Rita Metzger. Hugh was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and patriot. He achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy from 1953-1956 and served in the reserves until he retired from the service to his country in 1981. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1951 and then a Master's in Business Administration in 1953. He was a trust officer in banking until his retirement in 1985. He was active with the American Contract Bridge League, the South Bend Bridge Club achieving a Ruby Life Master. He was on the Board of Directors for the Family and Children's Center in Mishawaka from 1976 - 1991, and was a Past President of Sinai Synagogue from 1985-1987. Hugh always had a smile on his face. He had an impeccable memory and genuinely cared about others. He will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Aug. 14, at 11:00 a.m. at Sinai Synagogue. Burial, with military honors, will follow at the Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sinai Synagogue or the Jewish Federation of St. Joseph Valley.
