Mr. Jackie Lee "Jack" Smith, Sr., 79, passed away peacefully at home with his family near by after an illness of about three years.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 3-5pm at McGann Hay's Morning Star Funerals & Cremations, 21275 W. Cleveland Rd., enter off Shellbark Ave. The funeral will be held at 5:00pm also on Tuesday in the funeral home with Rev. Anne Mitchell, Chaplain at Harbor Light Hospice, officiating. Military Honors will be conducted. Cremation will follow at American Cremation Society with burial of the ashes at a later date with his first wife at Highland Cemetery.
Jack, as all of his friends knew him, was born on March 9, 1938 in South Bend to the late Fred and Mable (Cook) Smith. He survived his two wives: his first wife Barbara (Callantine) Smith who passed away on July 3, 1978 and his second wife Beverly (Rader) Smith who passed on August 30, 2003.
He served in the US Army in South Korea. A car guy his whole life, he could fix anything and worked as a mechanic his whole adult life retiring from AM General in 2000. He enjoyed going to the casinos, playing Bingo, buying scratch off Lottery Tickets, and working on automobiles.
Left to cherish Jack's memory are four daughters: Betty (Anthony) Olivier of South Bend, Janet Anglin, Rita Smith and Debra (Ed) Dean all of Mishawaka; two sons: Jackie Smith, Jr. of South Bend and Roy Smith of Mishawaka; and a brother Gene Smith of Kalamazoo, MI; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
