Joan E. Davies

South Bend, IN – Joan Ellis Davies, 100, of South Bend Indiana passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 22, 2019 in her home at The Sanctuary at St. Paul’s in South Bend, IN. Her family would like to thank the tremendous staff that took exceptional care of her at St Paul’s.
Joan was born in Detroit, Michigan on May 16, 1918 to Albert and Mary Ellis. In 1928 she moved with her parents to South Bend, IN. Joan graduated from St. Mary’s Academy (South Bend, IN) and the University of Miami (Coral Gables, FL) where she was one of the founding members of her chapter of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority.
On June 7, 1941 in South Bend, IN, Joan married William Owen Davies III, who preceded her in death on February 6, 1980. Joan was also preceded in death by her two eldest sons William Lee Davies (December 22, 1982), and John Ellis Davies (June, 26, 2007). She is survived by her daughter Mary Davies Will (Gordon) of Dallas, TX and her son James Matthew Davies of Miami, FL.
Joan was very active in the South Bend community as a Board Member of the Children’s Dispensary, and in 1941 a member of the Reserve League, which later became the Junior League and served in many capacities in that organization. She was also a member of the Christ Child Society and The Hoosier Art Patrons. Joan was a long time member of The Sacred Heart Parish at the University of Notre Dame.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Joan on Friday at 10:00am in the Chapel at St. Paul’s with Rev. Herb Yost, CSC, officiating. The family will recieve guests one hour prior in the West Reception area at St. Pauls. McGann Hay Funerals / Cremations / Gatherings is assisting the family. Cremation will take place at McGann Hay’s American Cremation Society, South Bend. Burial will be later with her husband and sons at Riverview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Children’s Dispensary of South Bend, The Christ Child Society of South Bend or the Center for Hospice Care, South Bend, IN.
