Joan Evelyn Stimax Leatherwood, a cherished mother, daughter, wife, grandmother, and great-grandmother, departed from this world on January 19, 2025. Born on March 5, 1933, in Westminster, Maryland, she was the only child of Gertrude and Paul Stimax. Joan’s life was a melodious journey, filled with passion for the performing arts and unyielding love for her family.
Joan studied at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland. Joan honed her vocal talents, captivating audiences throughout her life as a performer on radio, stage, and in the church. Her stories of those times included being an opening act for Abbott and Costello at the Baltimore Palladium, and appearing on Ted Mack’s Amateur Hour.
On September 10, 1955, Joan married Paul “Pete” Leatherwood, who preceded her in death in 2017. Together they raised two daughters, Cherie Smith, and Laurie (Nelson) Annis, who carry forward her legacy of strength and creativity. As a grandmother, she found immeasurable joy in the lives of her grandsons Reid (Anna Lockard) Smith, Zachary Bracker, and Adam (Tia Germann) Smith. The laughter and love shared with her two great-grandsons, Benjamin Lockard and Macaulay Smith, brought her profound fulfillment and delight.
An avid fan of the University of Notre Dame, Joan and Pete attended countless athletic events and functions. Joan will also be remembered for her love of cooking and planning and hosting dinner parties with family and friends. Pete’s job moved them to southern California where they enjoyed hosting parties by their pool. They also enjoyed several cruises, and travelled all over the world throughout their marriage. After retirement, they enjoyed many years at the home they built in North Fort Myers, Florida where they enjoyed visits from family and friends.
After Joan battled cancer two times, and Pete’s health started to decline, they moved back to South Bend to be closer to family. Although Joan battled cancer two more times, she was able to care for Pete until his death. She remained in their home, and enjoyed visits with her daughters and grandchildren.
Her neighbors, Chuck and Pam Whetstone, went above and beyond with daily visits, and their friendship and kindness was cherished by Joan and her family.
A private memorial gathering to honor the remarkable life of Joan will be held at McGann Hay, Granger Chapel. Joan will be cremated and buried with her husband Pete in Hampstead, Maryland at a later date.In place of flowers, please consider a donation to Homeward Bound Rescue at www.homewardboundawg.com.
