Joanna J. Horka, 80 years old, passed away at 6:45 AM on Saturday July 10, 2021 at her residence with husband Tom, and loving friends, by her side. Jo was born May 26, 1941 in Sullivan In. to the late Joe and Lois Harris.
As a youth, Jo attended Carlisle High School and worked on the farm cooking and serving farm hands. She attended IU Bloomington with roommate Barb Horka, who would later become her sister-in-law. In 1965, Jo received a BA in Speech & Hearing therapy from IU Bloomington, and later, a Masters in teaching autistic and the profoundly retarded from Indiana State University, Terre Haute, In. Joanna taught the autistic and the profoundly retarded in Kalamazoo, Grand Raids, and White Plains, NY, until she moved to South Bend. She taught one year in Plymouth In., and married Tom, August 24, 1974. Joanna leaves a sister, Marianne Unger in Holt Missouri; a brother, Arthur Harris in Carlisle, In.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at Sunnyside Church at 10:00 AM Wednesday 7/21/21, and later a graveside service will be at the Carlisle, Bethlehem Cemetery, In., home of her brother Arthur Harris.
