John Patrick McCahill, 76, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family
in his home on July 29, 2018.Born in South Bend on August 20, 1941, he was the son of the late Benedict and Clementine (Schmidt) McCahill.On July 7,1962, John married JoAnn French. She survives him. To their union, they were blessed with three children: John (Shelley) McCahill, Jr. and Robert (Beth) McCahill, both of South Bend and Laura (Joe) Kelty of Poland, OH. His memory will be cherished by six grandchildren: Ashley McCahill, Courtney (fiance, Jeffrey Armey) McCahill, Rachel McCahill, and Patrick, Joe and Mary Kate Kelty; step-granddaughter, Caitie (Nick) Rapelli; great-granddaughter, Kinsley McCahill; and step-great-granddaughter, Sophia Rapelli. He is also survived by his brothers: Michael J. of Noblesville, IN, Paul (Connie) of Angola IN, his sisters: Kathleen (William Gabele) Mc Cahill of Phoenix AZ, Mary Mc Cahill of Fishers, IN, Margaret (Trenton) Sturdivant of South Bend, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.John was very proud of his Irish Heritage and traveled to Ireland nine times. He was also an avid history buff. He truly enjoyed spending time with his family.
He was a plumber and was initiated as a plumber on April 4, 1961 into the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union, Local 172. He was a 57 year member and he retired on June 1, 2005.Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4-7 pm at the McGann Hay Funerals / Cremations / Gatherings, Granger Chapel, 13260 SR 23, enter off Cherry Rd. Funeral services will be Thursday at the funeral home at 1:00 pm with visitation from noon until 1pm. Fr. Michael Carr, John’s cousin, officiating. Burial with a Bagpiper will follow at Fairview Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
