John August Metz

August 20, 1955 — December 28, 2020

John August Metz, 65, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2020. He was born August 20, 1955 in Lake County, IN to the late Merritt David Jr. and Barbara (Heide) Metz but, had been a resident of Plymouth for the past 15 years.John is survived by his girlfriend and long-time companion, Melanie Jones of Plymouth, IN; brothers, Dave (Linda) Metz of Knox, IN and Rick (Jeannine) Metz of Martinsville, IN; nephews, Matt and Kyle (Taylor) Metz; and nieces, Korin, Kelsey, and Kristi Metz. John earned a Bachelor's degree from VanderCook College of Music in Chicago where he learned to play every instrument. He enjoyed brass instruments, but playing the piano was his favorite. After college he was a music teacher for a few years before deciding to go into the family business of running heavy equipment. His love of music only continued. He was an instructor with the Cavalier Drum and Bugle Corp for many years and directed and played piano for several church choirs over the years. Unfortunately a stroke at 55 ended John's music playing. John enjoyed traveling with Melanie, and his brother, Dave, and sister-in-law, Linda. A favorite memory was when the four of them went on a Bed and Breakfast tour of Ireland. They also traveled to Branson, MO many times attending the musical shows.Every year, John, his brothers and their father went to the Indy 500 time trials. John was gregarious, a master joke teller, always loved making people smile, and he loved his dogs. He never met a stranger. He will be so dearly missed by many. Please send donations in John's name to VanderCook College of Music, 3140 S. Federal St., Chicago, IL 60616.There are no services planned at this time.
