John E. "Jack" Mead, 82, passed away peacefully in his home on April 20, 2024 surrounded by his family. He was born July 28, 1941, in South Bend to the late Arthur and Nettie (Ortman) Mead.
On August 19, 1967, Jack married the love of his life, Janet (Warner) in South Bend. She survives him. To their union, they were blessed with three children: James (Tanya) Mead of Elkhart, IN, Kristen Bujtas (Dave) of Elkhart, IN, and John (Karen) Mead, II of Roanoke, VA. Also left to cherish his memory are his siblings, Donald Mead of Niles, Ml and Dennis Mead of Osceola, IN. He was blessed with five grandchildren, Kelli (Ashton) O'Hara of Ft. Meade, MD, Cole (Alexandria) Mead of South Bend, IN, Alexis Bujtas of Budapest, Hungary, Tyler (Darcie) Mead of Elkhart, IN, and Cameron Bujtas of Elkhart, IN; along with 4 great-grandchildren. Jack was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, June Gardner and Darlene Mohacsek; and brothers, Richard Mead and Harold Mead.
He proudly served in the Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1964. He attended Indiana University of South Bend graduating with a business degree in 1975. He worked as a C.F.O. Controller until his retirement in 2003. Jack was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed music, traveling, cars, and spending time with family.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 23 from 5-7 p.m., with a vigil service starting at 4:30 p.m., at the McGann Hay, Granger Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Granger will be celebrated on Wednesday, at 10:30 a.m., with visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame. The Mass will be live streamed on StPius.net or http://YouTube.com/@StPiusGranger
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to Caring Cove Hospice or Alzheimer's Association. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Sweeney and his staff at Caring Cove Hospice for their love and support for both Jack and his family.
