Judith Ann Armstrong passed away peacefully at her home on February 2, 2024 at the age of 82. She was born on August 9, 1941 in South Bend, Indiana to the late Charles C. and Helen J. (Michels) Armstrong.
Judith’s memory will live on with her son, Dale Armstrong (Jennifer) Strombeck; grandson, Charles; former husband, Dale L. Strombeck; and several nieces and nephews.
Judith was preceded in death by her sister, Marylou; and brother-in-law, Ernest Bouche.
Judith was an amazing person. She was a loving mother and grandmother, and a pillar of the community. She dedicated her life to helping those in need. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family and her dogs, Aldo and Bismark as well as many other faithful animal companions through the years.
She graduated from St. Joseph High School in South Bend in 1959. She went on to study nursing at the Holy Cross School of Nursing and received her diploma in 1962. Afterwards, she went on to continue her studies at Indiana University/ Purdue University in Indianapolis where she received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in 1971. In 1976 she studied at Indiana University in South Bend where she received a masters’ Degree in Special Education and in 1982 she completed 2 semesters of graduate work in School Education.
While completing her studies, Judith began work at Northern Indiana State Developmental Center in 1973 where she took on the heavy task of Director of Nursing. She was responsible not only for the children with special needs but also for keeping the facility running smoothly. She continued to work there until it was closed in 1998. After the hospital closed Judith went on to work for the State of Indiana as a nursing surveyor until she retired.
Judith received numerous awards during her lifetime. In 1989 she received the prestigious Saginaw of the Wabash Award for her outstanding service to the state of Indiana. In 1999 she received the Age of Excellence Award for outstanding commitment to service. In 2006 she received an award from the State Department of Health for 40 years of outstanding service to the community.
She was a long-time parishioner of St. Anthony De Padua Catholic Church in South Bend. Services were held at St. Anthony’s Church on February 16th.
Judith will be cremated per her wishes and buried at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park near her parents at a later date.
