Larry McClelland, 84, died Wednesday, July 18, 2018, after becoming ill while working out at his favorite Niles YMCA.
Larry was born in Greensburg, PA to Ethyle (Horner) and Nelson McClelland, and graduated from Aliquippa, PA High School and Carnegie Mellon University with BSME degree. He was employed by Mishawaka, Bendix Missile Div. from 1955 – 1973.
In 1959, he married Alma Abbiehl, a Memorial Hospital nurse. From 1973 – 1989, he worked at Allied Signal Automotive in South Bend as VP of Engineering and retired at age 55 to a 137 acre farm in Cass Co., MI. Mechanically inclined, he enjoyed his retirement years maintaining and repairing farm machinery and cars, as well as living close to the land.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years; brother, David of Edwardsburg; children: Martin (Lori) McClelland of Louisville, Leslie (LeeAnn) McClelland of Edwardsdburg, and Kathy (Howard) Whybrew of Liberty Lake, WA; grandchildren: Ashley (Jake) Anderson, Justin (Elsie) McClelland, Dava, Evie, and Aidan McClelland, and Emma, Calvin, and Nelson Whybrew; and two great grandchildren, Clifford and Russell Lawrence Anderson.
Larry was a long time member and elder of First Presbyterian Church. Other boards include WVPE, St. Joseph Co. Scholarship, Jefferson Twp. Planning/Zoning, and the South Bend Chapter of S.C.O.R.E.
A funeral service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 333 W. Colfax Ave., South Bend at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, July 22. The family will be available in the parlor one half hour before the service. A celebration of life will begin at 2:30 p.m. by the red barn at Alma and Larry’s home. Refreshments and music, according to Larry’s wishes, will be enjoyed.
