Lyla Lockhart

Lyla Symmes Lockhart, 96, passed away peacefully November 4, 2023, after a brief illness.

Born November 14, 1926 in Wilmington, NC, she was the daughter of the late Cleves and Eliza (Davis) Symmes.

On January 27, 1951, Lyla married the love of her life, Philip Bruce Lockhart. He preceded her in death in 2000. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Mary Bridgman and brother, John Symmes.

She is celebrated and remembered fondly by her two children: Amy (David) Lockhart Welday of Oviedo, FL and Bruce (Carol) Lockhart of Indianapolis, IN; three grandchildren: David (Jeanna), Darren (Sarah) and Jason (Lindsay) Welday; and seven great-grandchildren: Philip, Peyton, Breelan, Millison, Mila, Bennett and Noah.

Lyla was an avid reader who enjoyed learning new things and shared that love of learning with her family. During her career, she was a Pilot, a Radiology Tech and she sold reproductions of antique Peddler Dolls. She also had a heart for service and enjoyed volunteering her time with Junior League. She had an impressive and full life; and she will be missed by many, including her dear friends at Andre Place.

The family will hold a celebration of her life at a later date. Memorial donations may be made, in her name, to a charity of the donor’s choice.
