Mary Ann Mctigue

Mishawaka, IN - Mary Ann McTigue (McDonnell), 93, a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother is at peace with Christ and her husband Stephen T. McTigue. She will be greatly missed by her five children, Dr. Stephen T. McTigue, Jr. and his wife Connie (Yoder), David M. McTigue and his wife Mary Ellen (Chambers), Dr. M. Kathleen McTigue and her husband Dr. Edward Hirt, Beth Schmidt (McTigue) and her husband Dr. Frederic Schmidt, and Timothy S. McTigue and his wife Deirdre (Dockery). Mary Ann will also be deeply missed by her grandchildren Erinn Kelley (McTigue) and her husband Bryan Kelley, Corrie Podolak (McTigue) and her husband Alex Podolak, S. Joseph McTigue and his wife Hayley McTigue (Medsker), Shannon Kerby (McTigue) and her husband Joe Kerby, Molly Kitley MD (Hirt) and her husband Weston Kitley MD, Maureen Hirt, Colleen Nowak (Schmidt) and her husband Peter Nowak, Laura DuSchane (Schmidt) and her husband Patrick DuSchane, Katherine Schmidt, Madeleine McTigue, Daniel McTigue, and Liam McTigue and by her Great Grandchildren Samuel and Hadley Kelley, Myles and Ben Podolak and Fritz, Jack and George Nowak.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband Stephen T. McTigue, her infant brother Thomas McDonnell, her sister Margaret and brother-in-law Bud Magnus, her sister’s-in-law Marguarite Janning and husband Paul Janning, Katherine Bloomburg and her parents Thomas and Anita McDonnell and her father and mother-in-law Stephen P. and Margaret McTigue. Both of the Janning and Magnus families remain close and an extension of our families because our parents found it important to keep all of those kids connected growing up.Mary Ann was born on April 17, 1927 in Perry, IA to Thomas J. McDonnell DDS and Anita V. McDonnell (Dapolonia). For her first year of college she attended St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame, IN and transferred to Iowa State University for her last three years to gain her degree in Dietetics. She was invited to join the Pi Beta Phi Sorority and stayed close with her sorority sisters and chapter her whole life. Steve and Mary Ann met and started dating during one of her college breaks. After dating for a few years, they were married on September 1, 1949 at 8:00am in Perry, IA at St. Patrick’s Church. They celebrated 60 years of marriage together. Not long after getting married, the family started to grow. With that Mary Ann centered her life around the family she and Steve created. Mary Ann’s greatest joy was being a mother. She raised five children, 9 dogs, 2 or 3 cats and a long list of other pets over the years. Mary Ann had many hobbies and loves. She loved knitting, crafting, sewing, gardening and most of all cooking. She prepared the most beautiful meals for her family. The family gatherings and Mary Ann’s meals brought the family together and instilled the importance of family, friendship and love for generations to come.
Following her husband’s career through three states, their final home landed them in Mishawaka, IN. Their home was always the central place of family gatherings. Living on the beautiful St. Joe River in Mishawaka there was sledding in the winter, water skiing in the summer, and Easter Egg hunts in her beautiful garden in the Spring. Christmas was her favorite holiday, and it brings us great comfort knowing she’ll be able to celebrate it again with Steve in heaven. If you knew her, you likely knew about her extensive Santa collection that she spread around her home to welcome all visitors.
After all of her children left the nest, Mary Ann decided to finally practice in her field of Dietetics and work for the South Bend School System. It was a longtime goal of hers to utilize her college education, and she happily worked for SBSS for over 10 years with great satisfaction.
As a couple or with the family of seven Steve and Mary Ann took some great trips around the US and abroad. Most impressive was how they piled into their station wagon with 5 kids and all of their ski gear and cooking supplies to go out to Colorado, or even up to Michigan to enjoy the winter ski slopes with the Richard Rosenthal clan. We filled the ski hills with just our two families. Being natives of Iowa, Mary Ann and Steve decided to learn how to ski along in tandem with their children so that they could all be together on the slopes. This all started back in the 60’s when they lived in NY State. So many great memories and many friends acquired on those snowy adventures. After moving to Indiana, Mary Ann and Steve returned to NY State many times to visit their special friends, Ruth and Jim Scholtz.
Another one of Mary Ann’s favorite trips was in October 2010 when her two daughters Kathy and Beth and niece Mary Ann Prange visited her mother’s homeland in Romans-di-Varmo, Italy. She said it was something she had always wanted to do and one of her most prized adventures.
Mary Ann’s role as mother was only surpassed by her role as grandmother and great grandmother. The Grand’s will always remember her hugs and kisses, the treats she had hidden in her kitchen, cooking with her, crafting or playing games. She would never miss a birthday or holiday celebration. She loved to dote on her loved ones.
Throughout her life Mary Ann was a woman of great faith. Her faith and generosity extended beyond her busy family life to her volunteer service in the community. Many Sundays she would go early to church to lead the rosary before mass. She also volunteered for many local organizations, including Friends of the Snite Museum, being on the boards for the South Bend YMCA, Camp Eberhart, and Fernwood Botanical Garden. She knitted countless layette’s for the Christ Child Society so that babies born at the hospitals always had something to wear home. Mary Ann left a legacy of love that will carry on for generations to come through the hearts of all that knew her.
Mary Ann’s family sends special thanks to Renee’ Provost and the caregivers at North Woods Memory Care, Glenda Brown and her staff at The Caring Cottage and Heart to Heart Hospice for their love and compassionate care. Also, a special note of appreciation to family friend and caregiver Jeanne Martin for her gift of tenderness and companionship for our mother after Steve’s passing.
