Dr. Michael Gerald “Gerry” Quinn, 81, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, May 23, 2021. Gerry was born on January 30, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Thomas Patrick and Ruth (Erdmann) Quinn.
On March 30, 1964, Gerry married his college sweetheart, Diane Balconis, who was the love of his life. Cherished memories of Gerry will live on in the hearts of his wife and 4 children: Patti Quinn (Shad Combs), Jerry (Kristin) Quinn, Kevin (Stephanie) Quinn, and Sean (Jenny) Quinn; and 7 grandchildren: Patrick, Michael, Natalie, Mary, Sophia, Delaney, and Mikayla Quinn.
Gerry graduated early from the University of Notre Dame, attended the University of Miami Medical School and completed his residency in Pathology at Duke University. He then served as a Major in the Army at Martin Army Hospital, Ft. Benning, GA.
In 1972, Gerry joined the South Bend Medical Foundation. For over 28 years, he dedicated his life to service in medicine, including as Director of the Blood Bank and instructor of Pathology at Indiana University’s Medical School, ND Campus.
Gerry embraced many sports and especially loved all things Notre Dame. He was a life-long die-hard Cubs fan, who also cheered for the Bears and Blackhawks. He enjoyed reading and learning new words, recording family moments in photographs, as well as golfing, boating, hunting, fishing, skiing and playing tennis.
A devoted husband, Gerry and Diane were happily wed 57 years. They shared many adventures abroad-although, truth be told, he was just as happy spending a quiet night at home in her company. Gerry was a loving and dedicated father and grandfather who made family a priority. He taught us to love beyond measure, face life’s vicissitudes with grace and courage, and lift the spirits of those around us with laughter. He will be dearly missed.
Visitation for Gerry will take place on Tuesday, June 1, 2021, from 4 to 7 p.m. with a 21 gun salute presentation at 4:00 p.m., at the McGann Hay Granger Chapel, 13260 SR 23, enter off Cherry Rd.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 2, at 3:30 p.m. at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, located on the campus of the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN. Entombment will take place at Cedar Grove Cemetery at a later date after cremation has been completed.
