SOUTH BEND, IN - Patricia Scharlyn Seabaugh (née Carter), of South Bend, Indiana, left this life suddenly on November 30, 2021, to enter her eternal home. She was born in Oran, Missouri, on March 13, 1928, to Frank and Addie Carter, as the youngest of five children, and grew up in nearby Cape Girardeau, amid what she remembered as a lively and loving family. While in high school, she met Tony Seabaugh at a church youth event, and they became engaged after his military service. They married on December 6, 1946, in Cape Girardeau, remaining together 71 years, until his death parted them. They gave life to three children, Karen, Alan, and Brad, all of whom survive. The family followed Tony's career in the Federal Bureau of Investigation from Albuquerque, NM, to Levittown, NY, to Kansas City, MO, to Vienna, VA, and eventually to retirement back in Cape Girardeau. In 1992 they moved again to Hot Springs Village, AR, where they lived happily for 26 years. They moved to South Bend in 2018 to be close to family, but within months she was left a widow.
Patricia was a devoted mother and homemaker. As her children grew, she began volunteering and then working in the schools. Ever a hard worker, she was employed later at Sheets Wholesale in Virginia, served as a volunteer at the Southeast Missouri Hospital, and even in her final months helped in the store and office of Saint Paul's. In 1984, she was diagnosed with cancer and not expected to live long or to walk again; she battled back to do both, relying upon her deep Christian faith. She was an avid reader, puzzler, bowler, game player, needleworker, pianist, golfer, and the 2021 cornhole champion at Saint Paul's. She was also an excellent housekeeper and cook. Patricia was genuinely beautiful: she gave her best for others, and looked her best for others, too-always well-groomed and nicely dressed. She loved road trips and vacations and holidays, excitedly getting into the Christmas spirit long before December. She was a loving and attentive wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and great-grandmother (affectionately known as GG). In her last years at Saint Paul's, she made close friends and was active in many activities. Her caring spirit, warmth, good humor, positive attitude, and generosity brought smiles and inspiration to those around her.
She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, her husband, Tony J. Seabaugh, and her grandson David M. Cheek. She is survived by her daughter, Karen (Stephen) Cheek of Diamondville, WY; sons, Alan (Jan) Seabaugh of South Bend, IN and Brad (Theresa) of Brooklyn, NY; granddaughters, Allison Simon (Tim) of New Bloomfield, MO, Whitney (Tyler) Swinyard of Salt Lake City, UT, and Madison (Trevor) Griggs of American Fork, UT; grandsons, Thomas Seabaugh of Los Angeles, CA, John (Amanda) Seabaugh of South Bend, IN, Christian (Elayna) Seabaugh of Los Angeles, CA, Patrick Seabaugh of White Plains, NY, and Alex Seabaugh of Brooklyn, NY; and ten great-grandchildren. Those who mourn her loss are also grateful for her time on earth.
Patricia Seabaugh was a woman of faith who cherished this passage from the book of Philippians: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
The family plans a private celebration of her life.
