GRANGER – Richard Steven Szabo, 80, passed away at his home Friday, Jan. 4th.
Richard was born in South Bend, Indiana to Alex Szabo and Margaret (Schwartz) Pekari on Oct. 18, 1938. They precede him in death.
On Sept. 17, 1960 he married Patricia Hickey. Richard is survived by his wife, Patricia; their son, Steve (Mary) Szabo; sister, Suzanne Blain; companion, Ruth Folts; caregiver, Deborah Frye; and 2 nephews, Phillip and Brian Blain.
As a young boy, Richard learned how to fly fish, and even became casting champion at the age of 13. He attended Adam’s High School and was a starting offensive guard on the ’56 football championship team. After High School, with friends and family raced his ’41 Willys and held the record in 1/8th mi. drag racing for a time. This began his career in engine building and his own business, Shaker Racing.
For several winters, Richard resided in Florida. He lived there with his good friend, Barbara Rems. In his later years, if he wasn’t working on an engine, you could find Richard on his John Deere tractor mowing the lawn.
Visitation and services will be held for Richard on Sat. Jan. 12th starting at 10:00 am and the service at 12:00 pm at McGann Hay Granger Chapel, 13260 SR. 23 at Cherry Rd. Burial will follow services at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park.
