Robert L. Poor

Robert "Bob" Loyd Poor, age 83, passed away July 25, 2022 after a month-long battle with Covid-19 and Covid complications. He was known as a caring and humorous brother, a faithful and committed husband, a devoted and loving daddy, and a super-fun and adventurous BopBop. He will be remembered most for his service to others, sense of adventure, love of trains, boats, the Great Lakes, and skiing, and his overall zeal for life. He lived his one life to the fullest!Bob was born in Warsaw, Indiana, on July 11, 1939 to the late Loyd Duaine Poor and Mary Elizabeth (Wollen) Poor and he was raised alongside his siblings, James Seward, Amy Joanne, and William Edwin. During high school, Bob was active as a saxophone player in the band and enjoyed water sports, boating and family vacations in Michigan. After graduating from Warsaw High School in 1957, he attended Purdue University where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity, and served as the junior editor and photographer for the Purdue Exponent and senior editor of the campus humor magazine The Rivet. He went on to serve in the U.S. Army Reserves with training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and Fort Gordon, Georgia.On September 16, 1967, Bob married his wife, Judy Harden, and they founded several businesses including Night & Day Formal Wear, The Sitzmark ski store, and RE/AIM (Real Estate, Appraisal & Investment Management), which they ran for over 30 years. Together, they built not only the home they lived in in West Lafayette, IN, but also a life of love and joy while raising their daughter Suzanne "Suzy" (David) Younger. His love for his daughter was a powerful example of the love of God the Father, and his 54-year marriage to Judy shone as an example of fidelity and commitment to all who knew them. When grandchildren arrived, Bob became known as a fun-loving, doting "BopBop," known for donut trips, building things, play, and generally instigating adventure with his three grandchildren, John Paul, 11, Liesel, 9, and Peter Joseph, 5.Bob was always on the go…he never sat still. He was always helping, fixing, serving, and playing. As an active parishioner of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Lafayette, IN, he served numerous terms on the parish council and created and directed St. Joseph's Workers, guiding parishioners in hands-on care and improvement of the 19th century church and property. He delighted in being active and making memories with his friends and family whether it be sailing his 22' Catalina "Daughter & Dad" with Suzy on Lake Maxinkuckee, or downhill skiing with four-generations of family and as an active member of the 70+ Ski Club. His goal to was downhill ski until the day he died, and he did so! Known as the maker of excellent peanut-brittle, lover of peach pie, travel and train trips, and as a donut & ice cream aficionado, he knew how to celebrate the holidays and celebrate the everyday well.Bob had a deep commitment to his family, friends, and Jesus Christ. Five letters were printed on the leather portfolio he took everywhere with him–"TCBTD." Standing for "This could be the day," he said it was a reminder that this could be the day that something wonderful or something sad could happen, or it could be the day that Jesus called him home. Either way he wanted to be ready and live each moment to the fullest. He truly loved the Lord his God with all his heart, soul, mind and strength, and loved his neighbor as himself. He was a powerful witness to Life and to Love, and as we deeply mourn the loss of having him with us, we simultaneously rejoice that he has received his eternal reward. Well done, good and faithful servant. Bob is survived by his siblings, James (Marjorie) Poor of Scottsdale, AZ and William (Elizabeth) Poor of Columbus, IN; his daughter, Suzanne (David) Younger; and his grandchildren, John Paul, Elisabeth, and Peter Joseph Younger, all of Osceola, IN. He is preceded in death by his parents, Loyd Duaine Poor and Mary Elizabeth (Wollen) Poor; sister, Amy Joanne (Poor) Sparks; and brother-in-law, Phillip Madison Sparks of Lafayette, IN; and wife, Judy Harden Poor.The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30am on Friday, August 5th at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 52553 Fir Road, Granger, IN with visitation beginning at 9:30, with a luncheon immediately following after in the Parish Life Center. Graveside services and burial will follow at 4:30pm at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Covington, IN.
