Shirley Katz died peacefully on January 4, 2024 in her residence at Wasserman Home, a part of Hebrew Home, in Rockville, MD. A resident of the Hebrew Home complex for over a decade, Shirley was born in Chicago to Molly (Shellist) and Aaron Schatz and latter moved with them and her sister, Ann (Pollock), to South Bend, where she spent most of her life. Shirley married Isadore Katz in 1943 and gave birth over the next six years to two sons, Alan and Irvin. Isadore and Alan preceded Shirley in death, as did Shirley’s parents and sister, Ann.
Immediate family include Irvin, his wife, Beth (Schiff), their daughter, Julie Katz Schoper, her husband, Steve (Schoper), and their son, Chase Schoper; daughter-in-law, Alice (Leibowitz) Katz, her children, Blair, her daughter, Michelle Rummel, and Michelle’s daughters, Maddie and Emmie. However, Shirley was also close to the extended Schatz, Shellist, Katz and Waxman families.
Shirley was a member of Sinai Synagogue in South Bend for most of her life, maintaining contact even as she lived in Dallas and Rockville.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 8, 2023, in the chapel at Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery in Mishawaka.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sinai Synagogue, Hebrew Home of Greater Washington, or the charity of one’s choice.
