Shirley A. King, 78, passed away Friday in South Bend. She was born January 28, 1940, in New Carlisle, IN to the late Charley and Estella Sarber.
Shirley worked at Kocieski for many years and eventually retired from Miracle Ear in South Bend. She also worked at Dainty Maid, where she was able to show off her talent in baking and designing beautiful cakes. Shirley graduated from New Carlisle High School in 1955. She loved to sew, do craft projects and spend time with her family. She also enjoyed a good cup of hot tea.
Shirley married Cyrus “Gene” King on June 4, 1994. He preceded her in death on June 13, 2008. She was also preceded in death by four sisters: Jo Ann Ellen Sarber, Maxine Harness, Vera Walker and Millie Jones; and one brother, John Sarber.
She is survived by her loving nieces and nephews; Gary (Valorie) Jones, Gail (Gregory) Dhoore, Van (Kim) Jones, Susanne Haynes, Sally Foster, Sheila (Mike Binder) Harness, Penny Anderson, John Sarber Jr., Cindy (Randy) Hazen, Debbie Redman, Tracy (John) Machlan; as well as several great; and great-great nieces and nephews. Shirley is also survived by her step – niece, Teresa (Matthew) King, who was like a daughter to her and was her caregiver for many years; a step-daughter, Terry Jones; two step-nephews, Craig Trowbridge and Dale King; and step-grandchildren, CJ and Billy Jones.
Visitation will be held on Monday, May 7th from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the McGann Hay, Forest G. Hay Chapel, 435 S. Ironwood Dr., South Bend. Committal services will follow at Southlawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Center for Hospice Care, who took such good care of Shirley.
