Shirley Babbette "Babs" Waks

July 23, 1930 — July 6, 2023

Indianapolis

Shirley B. “Babs” Waks, 92, formerly of South Bend, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2023.

Born in South Bend on July 23, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Anna (Frank) Brown.

On August 30, 1953, Shirley married Melvin Waks. He preceded her in death on September 27, 2018.

Left to cherish her memory are three children, Anchell (Peggy) Waks of Blacklick, OH, Mark (Andi) Waks of Long Beach, CA and Robyn (Dan) Weisenbach of Carmel, IN; two sisters, Betty Lou Nevel of Chicago and Marilyn Brown of South Bend; seven grandchildren: David and Daniel Waks of Columbus, OH, Anna (Bryce) Gerber of Carmel, IN, Peter (Kaleigh) Weisenbach of Gilbert, AZ, Laura (Jacob) McCrory of McCordsville, IN, Ashten (Alex Dickson) Waks of Long Beach, CA and Graham (Rachael Petry) Waks of Nashville, TN; and three great-grandchildren.

Babs was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She received a bachelor’s degree in social work from IU. She was a long-time member of Sinai Synagogue and always active in the Jewish Community. She received the Spirit of Federation Award, from the Jewish Federation, in 2020. She was a member of Hadassah and a lifelong volunteer at the Jewish Federation, including being the Women’s Campaign Chair five times, and helping the seniors in the community by calling them and scheduling rides. She also volunteered for the Mental Health Association, the SB Community Resource Center Hotline, the Literacy Council, and the SB Community School Corporation. She had a heart for service and showed it not with just words, but with action. She will be dearly missed.

Funeral services will be held at Sinai Synagogue on Monday, July 10, at 1:00 p.m., with burial following at the Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery. The funeral will be live streamed on Zoom.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made, in her name, to the Jewish Federation of St. Joseph Valley, or to Sinai Synagogue.

McGann Hay is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.
