Sophie Kathleen Sweeney passed away unexpectedly after a brief illness on October 27, 2023, at the age of 15. She was born in Mishawaka, Indiana, on January 30, 2008 to Jack Owen Sweeney Jr. and Karagh Kathleen Brennan, they survive.
Sophie was a sophomore at Purdue Polytechnic High School. She loved all kinds of arts, from painting and crafts to creating unique nail designs and make-up. She would spend a whole day baking, making up new hair styles or painting pictures. She listened to music all the time and especially liked old-school and 2000’s rap and hip hop. At age 14 she got a part-time job at McDonald’s for a summer and enjoyed volunteering at the concession stand at the Elk’s .
Sophie was spunky, hilarious, open-minded, spontaneous, very blunt and honest, and also very sweet and a joy to be around. Her friends always came to her when they had problems and she gave them honest and empathic feedback.
She also loved the water: the beach, boating and swimming on Lake Harwood with her Aunt Missy. She loved the fair, making TikToks, and hanging out with her friends. When Sophie was 5 years old she was tall enough to ride the “big kid” rides and was fearless in doing so. After that, she refused to ride the kiddie rides again.
Sophie had many dreams including studying American Sign Language, and becoming an esthetician.
She was always up for having fun. On a recent family trip to Tennessee, she was in awe of the parrots landing on her shoulders.
Sophie was proud of her style and that she was going back to school after covid had kept her home for a long time. She had the best smile, soft skin and beautiful eyes.
Sophie is survived by her parents; siblings: Brooklyn Brennan, Michael Olmstead, Lydia, Simon, and Madylin Sweeney; grandfather, Edward Gleckler, grandma, Cathy; nephews, Kaizer and Lennon; aunts, Melissa McGann (Cheryl Hughs), Colleen Andert, and Angela (John) McMahan; uncles, Brian and Robert Brennan; cousins, Corinna, Sam, Zach, and Justin and lots of Polish - Irish family, and her friends. She also leaves behind her beloved grey cats Violet and Indigo.
She was preceded in death by grandmother, Carol Gleckler and grandfathers, Jack Sweeney Sr. and Terry Brennan.
There is a hole in the lives of her family and friends. She is profoundly missed and will always be with us.
Memorial donations can be made to the Brennan – Sweeney families at https://gofund.me/3d189c9f or Ronald McDonald House at www.rmhcmichiana.org.
