Born August 16, 1935 in Racine, WI, he was the son of the late Ellsworth R. and Bertha (Rykowski) Sawyer.
On July 16, 1960, Tom married the love of his life, Jo Ann (Jenson) Sawyer. She survives him. Also left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Jennifer E. Sawyer of Carmel, IN, and two grandchildren, Adam and Jude Byrne.
He graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a Bachelor's degree in Economics and Labor in 1960. Tom proudly served in the Army and was discharged in 1963.
The Sawyers made homes in Minnesota, Wisconsin, New Hampshire, New York, and Indiana.
Tom was an Industrial Relations executive who negotiated on behalf of his employers: US Gypsum, Sprague Electric, Hypertronics, Reynolds Metals, and Interroyal Corporation.
Tom was an executive with Diamond Transportation System, Inc. before he and Jo Ann owned and managed Speedway Haulers, Inc. for 15 years. Following the sale of Speedway, Tom was President of Michiana Transport, Inc. before joining Morgan Driveaway as Director of Transportation, the position from which he retired.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, friend, and mentor - an extraordinary man who was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
Tom will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery. His beautiful life will be celebrated with a reception taking place on Saturday, March 10 at Morris Park Country Club, 2200 McKinley Avenue, South Bend, Indiana from 2 PM to 4 PM.
