SOUTH BEND - Vikkie Rae (Furlong) Verteramo was born in 1945 to the late Keen and Dorothy Furlong in Pittsburg, Penn. She grew up in River Park, the oldest of four siblings: Jeralyn, Karren, and Robb. Vikkie graduated from John Adams High School in 1963 and earned her teaching degree from Ball State in 1976. Her passion for the arts drove her career spanning 39 years with the South Bend School Corporation. Her specialty was recognizing each student's unique abilities and through photography, ceramics and painting taught them to express themselves through art. At home she encouraged her children to be themselves. Although she retired in 2016, she continued to teach her family to always smile in the face of adversity, to be strong and support one another through good times and bad. Vikkie passed away Saturday morning surrounded by her family. She leaves behind a husband (Frank), and five children (Michael, Melissa, Christine, Armando, and Franco), as well as eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held at McGann Hay University Chapel, 2313 E. Edison Rd, from 4-7pm Tuesday March 16th. The family and friends will celebrate her life at 1:00pm Wednesday in the funeral homes. Masks will be required along with social distancing. To send private condolences or to share memories, please visit www.McGannHay.com
